BUILE SHUIBHNE

THE MADNESS OF SWEENEY

Buile Shuibhne

This new show is inspired by the old legend of Buile Shuibhne, the mad Kind Sweeney. David commissioned, with the financial support of the Arts Council, New York based composer Dana Lyn to compose a suite of music for string quartet and uilleann pipes. This new work will be performed by David Power and the ConTempo Quartet.

The ConTempo Quartet praised as a “fabulous foursome” (Irish Independent) and noted for performances which are “exceptional” (The Strad) and “full of imaginative daring” (The Irish Times), ConTempo Quartet has forged a unique place in Irish musical life.

The eminent Irish Actor Barry McGovern will read excerpts from a translation of the ancient story. It`s hero, Mad Sweeney, undergoes a series of purgatorial adventures after he is cursed by a saint and turned into a bird at the Battle of Moira. The poetry spoken by the mad king, exiled to the trees and the slopes, is among the richest and most immediately appealing in the whole canon of Gaelic literature.

2018 World Premiere was at the Clonmel Junction Arts Festival and followed with a performance at the Dungarvan Summer Music Festival.
